Being A Mother Is Forever

No matter their age or what they have accomplished, you still worry about your children. You never stop thinking about them or wanting the best for them. Perhaps I didn't fully understand this until I had my own.

My brothers and I were very different personalities, as well as in our interests, our strengths and our ambitions. My M.O.M. had her hands full adopting to our needs.

Like many people, when I was a teenager, she and I went through some rough patches. However, after I started working full time, our bond became closer when we took a two week vacation together. I came back with a renewed respect for her and all that she had been through. I also knew that no matter what, she would always be there for me.

Even when I was married, every morning, she would phone me at work at the same time. It didn't matter if we had spoken the night before, she would still phone t.o touch base. Those moments were "our time'.

I would give anything to have those moments again.

Setbacks Lead to Stronger Comebacks

W.h.o. doesn't love a great comeback story? Hollywood does. So does the sports world. There are also many examples where individuals overcame incredible setbacks and are better and stronger.

Personally, in every difficult situation or adversity, I have been through, I recovered, stronger, wiser, more resilient and able t.o take on whatever happened next.

Here are some situations/events that are considered amongst the greatest comebacks:

Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln grew up in meagre circumstances, failed at business twice and had what most considered a nervous breakdown. He lost when he ran for Congress, lost twice when he ran for the Senate and lost as a vice-presidential candidate. He then went on t.o be elected the sixteenth president of the United States

The Boston Red Sox
They won the very first World Series and won four more "". However, they did not win another world championship for eighty- years! In the "2004" ALCS , they lost the first three games against the New York Yankees. No team had come back from such a deficit. But they did and then beat the St. Louis Cardinals in four games straight!

The Buffalo Bills
They recovered from a thirty-two-point deficit against the Houston Oilers in "93" and won the game in overtime. It was considered the greatest postseason comeback professional football has ever seen.

The Cleveland Cavaliers
They are the first NBA team t.o overcome a three game to zero deficit and win the championship. It was also the first major sports championship any Cleveland sports team had won since 64.

Robert Downey Jr
He had great success at an early age including an Academy Award nomination for the film, Chaplin. He then was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges. He was on probation, served jail time and court-ordered drug rehabilitation. After five years of setbacks, he decided t.o have a comeback and successfully started in the Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes franchises and has become one of the most popular actors in Hollywood.

Things We Remember From Childhood Books

Madeline L'Engle said, “You have t.o write the that wants t.o be written. And if the will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”

Children’s books are full of timeless advice. Often we forget they are as we become hardened by experience. We find explanations for why things are the way they are and we lose our sense of wonderment.

Those books we enjoyed as children often will be put on shelves .to gather dust until our children or grandchildren discover them.

Often, it takes the simpleness of a story meant for little ones to remind us of what is really important. We should treasure them.

Healthy Choices For Women Over Fifty-Five

Women face unique health issues beginning at age fifty and throughout the rest of their lives. Heart disease, osteoporosis, breast cancer and diabetes occur more often in older women than in women.

Your family health history can influence your health risks in the years ahead. So can your lifestyle before and after menopause. Here is some interesting information about what you need more of and what t.o cut out when you reach this age:

Heart Disease, Not Breast Cancer Is What Women Should Worry About
Heart disease is actually the top killer for women. Each year, heart and stroke kill “31,000” women in Canada, according to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Women’s heart health risks increase after menopause, yet just one in five women believe heart disease is the greatest threat t.o their health.

Heart Attacks Are Different
For women, the most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort, but they are more likely t.o experience shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

You Are Not The Only One
Millions of women can’t control the “gotta go” feeling (urge incontinence) or leak during exercise or when they sneeze or cough (stress incontinence), and this risk increases after menopause. It’s common but not normal, and any leaking of urine should be evaluated and treated.

Your Sleeping Position Matters
Stomach and side sleeping positions can cause wrinkles over time, and this effect gets worse as you age thanks t.o the natural thinning of your skin, according t.o a study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Most sleep wrinkles can be seen on the forehead, lips, and cheeks. If you can tolerate it, sleeping on your back can slow down development of wrinkles.

You Really Are What You Eat
Plan a healthy diet rich in good fats, dark leafy greens, berries, and fish. Diets that limit carbs can also boost brain health. Your brain needs healthy fats, and fewer sugars and carbs.

Stick To A Bedtime
Most of us haven’t had a real bedtime since childhood. However, getting adequate sleep is highly underappreciated as a health issue, and setting and sticking to a regular bedtime can make sure you are getting enough. The Office on Women’s Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least seven to eight hours of sleep nightly.

You Can Still Get Pregnant
If you haven’t officially entered menopause, you can still become pregnant, and you may need t.o use birth control. Menopause is diagnosed when a woman hasn’t had her period for straight months. Most women enter menopause at age fifty-one.

Exercise Regularly
Weight training can greatly increase your overall muscle, ligament and tendon strength as well as bone density. This improves a woman's balance and ability t.o walk. Strength training, lifting weights or exercising against resistance, can also prevent or slow bone-weakening osteoporosis. Strength training also can lessen arthritis pain. Women who are physically active are less likely to develop adult-onset diabetes. You do NOT have to get in Ten Thousand Steps!

Falling Is A Real Risk
It’s not just the elderly who are in danger of falls and fractures: research finds falls become more common after the age of 40, particularly in women. Falling is more dangerous than you think: it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and mortality in the elderly, according the Centre for Disease Control.

What lifestyle changes did you make as you got older?

Lets Talk About Emergency Preparedness

In the event of a major disaster, experience has shown us that it will likely take three or more days for emergency services such as police, fire, ambulance, and other outside assistance to reach many neighbourhoods. the services we most take for granted (gas, electricity, water and phone) may be disrupted for days. No community is without risk

Emergencies and natural disasters are usually unpredictable. A little preparation could mean the difference between life and death during those times. With all that has happened the past year and throughout this winter, I felt it was appropriate t.o share these suggestions for how t.o be ready:

Outlet-free Chargers
Smartphones and laptops will still work when the power is out—as long as you’re prepared. Having a juiced-up portable battery or small generator will keep you in touch with loved ones and with any emergency updates.

Cordless Radio
Gathering around the radio might seem like a thing of the past, but it could prove vital in an emergency situation. It allows you t.o get in touch with what’s going on locally. You won’t miss any important messages warning you not t.o leave—or t.o get out fast. Make sure you have a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio so it can work when the power is out.

Medications
Sometimes, the way medications are dispersed now, we have just a very small supply available. In a disaster, it might be hard to replenish those supplies. Talk to your doctor about writing a larger prescription so you have a couple of weeks work on hand if you can’t reach the pharmacy.

Lantern
Handheld flashlights are convenient t.o carry and store, but their beams won’t light up a room the way your lamps do. In addition t.o battery-powered flashlights, pick up a lantern, which can brighten up a larger amount of space.

Batteries
If you’ve been using your phone as a flashlight and haven’t touched an actual torch in years, don’t be surprised if the batteries in your backups have worn out or corroded. A pack of extra batteries never hurts.

Non-perishable Food
Stocking up on food is a no-brainer if you know you won’t be able t.o get t.o a grocery store, but you might be surprised by just how much food t.o keep on hand. The Red Cross recommends keeping two weeks worth of food available in case you’re unexpectedly stuck at home, or enough t.o last three days if you’re evacuating. Get creative and stick with foods you actually want t.o eat.

Pet Food
Don’t forget your furry friends when you’re stocking up on food. Keep at least two weeks' worth of dry food on hand so your pets can stay healthy and safe.

Extra Propane
If your home’s electricity or gas isn’t working, the oven and microwave would be out of the question. Keep extra propane on hand so you can fire up a BBQ or camping stove.

Water
H2O seems like a given, but if anything goes wrong with your local water system, you’ll need t.o have a backup. As a rule of thumb, make sure you have a gallon per person per day, ideally enough to last two weeks. If you don’t want t.o leave jugs of water sitting around all the time, fill clean, empty soda bottles or a large water dispenser when there’s a storm coming.

Cash
Don’t assume you can rely on plastic during an emergency. Card readers might not work, and ATMs could run out of money during a natural disaster, so keeping backup bills on hand could be a lifesaver. Talk to your family about how much you can afford to keep out of the bank and where the safest place in your home for it is.

Tool Kit
Even if you’re not used to making your own repairs, a toolbox could be a vital resource during an emergency situation. A basic toolkit with items such as a wrench, screwdrivers, and a hammer can help you fight back when your home and supplies are under stress.

Copies of Important Documents
It’s always a good idea to keep original copies of important documents like homeownership papers or insurance information, but keep a backup on hand too. Leave hard copies in a safe space (away from the originals), or save them digitally in a password-protected file in the cloud.

First-Aid Kit
A well-stocked first-aid kit is critically important. The Red Cross recommends keeping bandages, an instant ice pack, antiseptic wipes, scissors, and more.

Just-for-fun Items
When you’re rushing t.o pack your bags for an evacuation, a few non-essentials can actually be some of the best things for your mental well-being. Pack a book, a child’s favourite stuffed animal, or playing cards. Letting yourself relax a bit will help normalize the situation and take your mind off the stress.

How prepared are you t.o handle an emergency or natural disaster?

Fall in love with someone who deserves your heart. Not someone who plays with it.

Fall in love with someone who loves your smile and would do anything t.o see it.

Fall in love with someone who isn’t shy t.o kiss you in public.

Fall in love with someone who is proud to introduce you t.o their friends and family.

Fall in love with someone who will never take you for granted.

Fall in love with someone who doesn’t just say the right things. They do the right things.

Fall in love with someone who would never do anything t.o hurt you.

Fall in love with someone who loves and accepts you for your flaws and scars and thinks you are perfect just the way you are..

Fall in love with someone who wants t.o wake up beside you every day.

Fall in love with someone who tells you every day that they love you.

Toxic Positivity

I am one who believes in the power of positive thinking. After all, looking on the bright side is an understandable way t.o cope with difficult situations. I have seen firsthand, the consequences of being the opposite can have. However, unrealistic optimism can actually make you unhappy, unhealthy and you can come across as a jerk.

I decided t.o take a closer look into why being positive can have a negative side

Toxic positivity is a term bouncing around the internet lately, Loosely defined, it’s a forced optimism, a desire/need t.o shut down negative emotions as soon as they show up. It’s usually not the positivity itself that’s toxic. It’s the incessant need t.o feel happiness or to appear happy, that can be counter-productive.

When we insist on telling others t.o look on the bright side, all we’re doing is invalidating their experiences. People dealing with something difficult don’t necessarily want t.o be told what t.o do. What they want is for someone t.o be there and t.o listen

We can’t expect our lives t.o be endlessly positive. We need t.o learn how t.o accept our negative emotions. Humans are flawed. We get jealous, angry, resentful, and greedy.

The relationship you have with yourself is often reflected in the relationship you have with others. If you can’t be honest about your own feelings, how will you ever be able t.o handle someone else expressing real feelings to you?

For example, don't say t.o someone, “It could be worse.” You should say, “That sucks. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.” Another bad phrase is “If I can do it, so can you!”. A better option is, “Everyone’s story, abilities, limitations are different, and that’s okay.

I am sure you can think of other examples that just grate on your nerves when you hear them.

Instead of practicing toxic positivity, aim for balance and the acceptance of both good and bad emotions rather than all-or-nothing thinking. You and those around you will benefit.

Want to play dirty Scrabble?

I love word challenges and have played Scrabble since I was in grade school. Besides chess, it is a game that really brings my competitive nature.

A friend and I were chatting recently, and he recalled how I routinely trounced him, whenever he would bring out the game. T.o beat Covid boredom and try a new way t.o be victorious, he suggested these new rules for his version of Dirty Scrabble:

>Players must sit two metres apart
>Dirty words score double points
>Letters can be traded for sexual favours.
>Vibrators allowed!
> First person to orgasm and score one hundred points wins!

I almost spit out my tea and couldn't stop laughing. I promised to get back to him.

Since I do love the game, I thought I would dig a little into it's history and share some of what I found out.

Starts First
Most players know the games has One Hundred tiles. Which player goes first is determined by the person who picks the letter closest t.o A.

Who invented Scrabble?
No, not a writer, teacher, or librarian. Actually, it was Alfred Mosher Butts, an out of work architect from Poughkeepsie, New York. He used elements from anagrams and crossword puzzles. He designed the letter distribution by studying the front page of the New York Times.

Qi is one of the top words to win at Scrabble
The top words t.o win at Scrabble include qi, za, phoney, retinas, xu, zlotty, hook, gyoza, bingo, and amigo.

Hundreds of words are added to the game each year
Merriam-Webster adds hundreds of words to each new edition of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary. For example, it is now officially O.K. to use the word O.K. now.

Men and women play Scrabble for different reasons
A study in Psychological Research showed that men and women play the game t.o meet different needs. Men focus their energy on practicing anagrams and evaluating the game while women are more apt to play Scrabble as a hobby.

If you play the Scrabble robot, you will never win
Attention Super Scrabble players if you are getting bored playing with mere mortals: try playing against a robot equipped with AI and a camera. The robot wins every game but doles out consolation prizes.

Scandals in Scrabble championships have happened
Every once in a while, players get caught cheating. Scandals include a player smuggling in a pocket full of blank tiles and another hiding a “G” in another player’s pocket.

In my lifetime, I have played Scrabble hundreds of times. Several years ago, I began playing it online against international challengers.

Yesterday, while cleaning out a closet, I found my original board game. I dusted it off with a renewed appreciation. Dirty Scrabble was starting to sound a lot more interesting

It's time t.o say good-bye t.o the Year of the Rat and say hello t.o the Year of the Ox.

Over a billion people in China and millions around the world celebrate Lunar New Year.

Lunar New Year begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, days later.

Based on the Chinese Zodiac, animals and their attributes are assigned t.o each year in a twelve-year repeating cycle. If you are born during the following years, you are an Ox.
Birth years: 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

In Chinese culture, the Ox is a faithful friend that made great contributions t.o the development of society. Like the ox, people born in the Year of the Ox are said t.o be industrious, cautious, hold their faith firmly, and always glad t.o offer help.

Being open-minded is a phrase often tossed around, especially on a site like this. But what does it really mean? Are you willing to try anything? Are you willing to toss aside all pre-conceived ideas, values, moral beliefs?

To me, being open-minded is the willingness to consider new or differing ideas and opinions. However, It does not oblige me to agree or consent.

This landmark album was released on "February , 71". It spent thirteen weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 Album Chart. It stayed on the Billboard charts for Three Hundred and Thirteen Weeks!

It went on to win four Grammy Awards including Song of the Year making King the first solo female artist to win Record of the Year, and the first woman to win the Song of the Year. Amongst the 'classics' featured on this album are:
"I Feel The Earth Move"
"So Far Away"
"It's Too Late"
"You've Got A Friend"
"Tapestry"

" Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" showcases King's rise to stardom. She started out as part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin. Her best friends were Cynthia Well and Barry Mann and she went on to become one of the most successful acts in popular music history.

I thoroughly enjoyed the local production which received nightly standing ovations. The Broadway version won two Tony Awards.

Taking A Break Is Not A Sign of Defeat

The Mountain is a poem by English author and artist Laura Ding-Edwards . I.t is also the of her poetry book that was released in October "2019."

She does not proclaim her book t.o be one of self-help nor a cure for anything. Her overall view is that perfection is unattainable, kindness is paramount, and embracing every part of we are is the o.n.l.y way we find any kind of peace within ourselves.

This poem is a reminder that it is o.k t.o not always be o.k and is nothing wrong with taking a break as that is not a sign of defeat.

The author of those words is unknown. However, I found them posted on multiple sites.

Be Giving. Be Loving. Trust wisely. Listen closely but never lose yourself in the process.

You must have respect for yourself and show others that you do before they can respect you.
